Chyros & Chronos

Chyros & Chronos

Everything today is controlled by TIME. We get up at 6.00 AM in morning, have break fast at 7.00 AM, reach work at 8.00 AM lunch at 1.00 PM, finish work at 5.00 PM reach home by 6.30 PM, dinner at 8.30 PM, go to bed by 10.00 PM. Without our knowledge time been controlling us.

So what is time? Time is a unit of measure by which we measure the period of season. For a common man a day is divided in to 24 hours of which each hour have 60 minutes and each minute is of 60 seconds. And those 24 hours makes a day and 7 such days is a week and 30 or 31 such days makes a month and 12 such months make a year and so on.

Our date of births are considered one of the important identity of ourselves. Thus we all are controlled by time. When we think about time we see three specific periods. The time you are reading this article is now, the time before you read is past and the time we going to have or still to come is future.

Past is something which has already occurred and by no means we cannot rewrite our past. However we can learn from our past our mistakes and rectify them now and it will be a lesson for us in future.

When we learn more about time we see there are two types of time. One is the normal time what we see live today or the present time or called Chyros and the the other time is the specific period of time or the appointed time which we had in occasions called Chronos.

To make it more clear the daily routine is Chyros while the opportunities what we had in life are Chronos. The common feature behind both are we cannot control both Chyros and Chronos. But there is one and only one person who is in charge of time and he lives above the time, who made time and controls the time and he is none other than God.

When did the time begin? The time begin from the time the universe was formed. It dates back to billions or trillions of years which no humans know but we suppose the beginning of time is from the beginning of universe. But God who made the universe was there far before the universe was formed! And he will still be there even if the whole universe collapse out! Thus God is above the time. It’s God who set up time. In Genesis 1:14-19 We see God setup the sun, moon, stars etc as a measure to measure time as days, months, years etc. Since God is God he can change the course of time. We see in the book of Joshua 10:12-14.

On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.” So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting for Israel! (Joshua 10:12-14 NIV)

When a common man like us Joshua was in a war for Israel over Amorites he asked God to stop the sun from setting as they were winning the war and God answered his prayers by stoping sun at Gibeon from setting down and held moon at Aijalon Valley.

See God is able to control time. In our daily life we consider two times like good time and bad time. When things go all fine and according to our plans we say we have a good time. But when things go out of our hands and not working as what we plan we call it bad time. But we always tends to forget God is in control and he is able to clear up things. Bad things mostly happens in life to make us to understand our limitations and to depend on God.

Many times we had great opportunities in life but some how we missed them and keep regretting on it. But as it says in the Proverbs 3:5,6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. “(Proverbs 3:5, 6 NIV) trust God He can get back our lost opportunities to come back to us or reframe even better opportunity than what we missed.

Therefore let’s not worry on anything trust in God with all your heart and soul, He will make our paths straight. There is always a time for God to do things in life. Sometimes we don’t understand why it happened so. But later, may be after many years we will see things in life and understand why it all happened like that. And we will be thankful it all happened so. Let me pull out an instance from Bible and will conclude this thought here.

We all heard about the story of Mosses. He been considered the greatest leader ever in the whole world till today. We have heard the incident of Mosses dividing the Red Sea. When we read about that incident in Exodus 14 we clearly see it was not an easy time for Mosses. Mosses was just one person as any one of us but God used him to deliver Israelites from Egypt. When they set out the exodus Mosses had six-hundred thousand men alone with him which gives us an account of another six-hundred thousand women there children, animals and everything together around four million people and there animals when they set out the exodus. All these people had set their exodus looking at Mosses. For each and every basic things they looked to him for water, for food, justice etc.

When they came to Red sea they were stand still as there was no further way they could move forward and then they came to know Pharaoh is coming behind to catch them with his mighty army. They were absolutely trapped. They had very high mountains on both sides, a sea in the front and a mighty army coming to catch them from behind and it was late evening. What could they do? They all turned to Mosses for answers and Mosses had no option other than to cry to God. He been crying to God for a long time. As an answer to his cry did God divided the Red Sea for Israelites and they crossed the Red Sea and when Egyptians tried the same God made the sea back to normal and they were killed. The question is why Mosses had to cry to God? Why he had to undergo such a tough time? The answer is not in his days but coming to the book of Joshua when Joshua send spies to see the land of Jericho there we see a testimony from Rahab saying –

and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. (Joshua 2:9-11 NIV)

See it was for having this fear for those people in that land of Jerico and so on that Mosses had to cry out to The Lord out there in front of the Red Sea! Things appears bad to us but there will always be a good reason coming behind your current bad situations.

Coming back to time, Bible clearly warns us in many parts about lack of time. Jesus said he’s going to come back soon to gather his children soon so be ready. We all know the story of 10 virgins who went to meet up the bridegroom. (Mathew 25:1-13). Only five who were ready could go with the bridegroom and five were left behind. It’s true all ten were expecting bridegroom but only those who were ready to receive him went with him so be alert and be ready as the time is short. Remember the last 13th verse. 13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.”(Mathew 25:13).

Let’s not be deceived by thinking we have more time. Be useful to God as time is short and we don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow. We don’t know whether we will be alive tomorrow. (Luke 12:16-21). So let’s do the good work of Lord be useful to him and be ready to meet him by leading a holy and spotless life before it’s too late.

“Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 NIV)
