‘Free’ is perhaps the best word we like to hear! Why we like it so much? When someone says it’s free we don’t have to pay anything but we can own the free labelled item absolutely at no cost! Since we are not loosing anything to get the item regardless we need it or not we grab it.
The term ‘Free’ is mostly used in business. Business is of course dealing with money. And in business nobody likes to do anything that can loose their money. Therefore in everything you find free there will always be a way to earn money from it.
For example you need a shampoo. You go to a store and finds the regular shampoo you use at the regular price. But then you notice another brand of Shampoo with an additional 50 Cents gives a free soap. Normally you go to take that brand shampoo as it offers an additional soap at no cost. Thus the other company made you buy their product by offering a soap free along with their product to your regular shampoo company. Thus in one or other way they make profit out of it.
Another example, if you go late in a supermarket you can find things they cannot sell the next day due to safety measures selling at low price. Especially bread, croissants etc. More closer it get to closing time more reduced the price become. If the things won’t get sold, by the end of the day when everyone leaves the employees can take it with them ‘free’ if they want as it goes to the trash otherwise. Thus things that cannot be stored longer depreciates it value as the time goes by.
In Bible we see a business. Sparrows were used for offerings by poor people to God in olden days. In olden days people had to bring certain animals like bull, lamb, sparrows etc as sacrifice to God according to the kind of sacrifice and to their financial aspects. The poor were allowed to bring sparrows as they were of low cost. In Mathew 10:29 it clearly tells us the value of a sparrow.
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.” (Matthew 10:29 NIV)
See a sparrow was valued only half a penny those days! In another portion in Luke it says-“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.” (Luke 12:6 NIV).
If a sparrow was half a penny how many sparrows will you get for two pennies? The answer is 4. But here we see for two pennies 5 sparrows are given. How? A simple explanation is Sparrows are not worth enough for the merchant to keep it longer. The money and effort to keep the bird alive is more than the value of the bird itself. Therefore to increase his sale, profit and to get rid of the birds the merchant implies the idea of ‘giving free!’ Thus when you pay 2 pennies the merchant gives you not 4 sparrows but 5 sparrows by giving one absolutely free!
The free sparrow is exactly the same like the other 4 sparrows what the person bought. But how did it become free? As said the expense to keep that bird alive is more than it’s value hence the merchant gives the bird free of cost. But the next part is more important in both the verses we read “Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.”
People might think the bird is not worth enough to be valued but the Heavenly Father does not leave away the bird like humans but God cares for that small bird! What an amazing God! Man sees things worthless and of no use but for God even though it appears useless and worthless He still cares for it!
Dear readers are you considered useless and worthless before others? Have you been made waste rubbish and of no use to others? Do you feel you are rejected? Are you undergoing severe mental distress and trouble and no one to care for you? Don’t be worried there is a loving God up there who sees everything and values everything. See the sparrow appeared to be of no value to humans but God cares for it! See the next verse says “So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:31 NIV). “Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”(Luke 12:7 NIV). See the verses, God consider you not just worthier than ‘one’ sparrow but God considers you more valuable than ‘Many Sparrows.’
Therefore my dear friends, don’t worry when you go through such harsh situations in Life. Cling on to God. He finds you valuable. You are not an accident but you are made for a purpose. To many who sees us we may appear of no value but to God He chooses the least things of the world.
“But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.” (1 Corinthians 1:27-29 NIV)
Therefore do not be worried or discouraged on your current situations. Things will change in His time and He will bring us to glorious ways later in life. Therefore let’s put our trust and hope in God and submit ourselves as you are valued in his sight. God will change all our situations and can bring new things to your life. He cares us more than we care for ourselves.
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.” (Isaiah 49:15-16 NIV)
“When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you. Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”(Psalm 73:21-26 NIV)
“Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life.” (Isaiah 43:4 NIV)
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” (Isaiah 43:18-19 NIV)
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:6-7 NIV)
