Pain is the worst feeling that anyone can have in life. Nobody likes pain. Why? Because it hurts and it creates changes in the comfort zone we enjoy. Pain can therefore be said as a sensation that creates disturbance to the comfort we enjoy. Pain is usually caused as a result of hurt. Hurt is the causative agent of pain. Depending on the intensity and the way of appearance there are different sorts of pains. Pain can be small like the pain we get as we hit on a hard surface to extreme pain like that in an accident, short term pain which persist for few minutes to long term pain that can prevail for months and years, physical which can again be external or internal, mental pain that pain we face on getting hurt from others through words, actions, feelings etc. Thus there are a lot of different types of pain. To the children it is the physical pain which bothers the most were as to adults it’s the mental pain that can hurts more than physical pain. Again this varies depending on the ability to withstand pain.
Pain as said is a sensation and therefore it’s hard to visualise the impact of pain on other person because your levels to withstand pain is not the same to the other person. We hear when people share their problems others tend to say ‘I can understand the pain what you going through.’ It is absolutely wrong! Because they can’t even understand 10% of pain what you going through. It’s because the ability to withstand pain is different on each individuals.
Even though the pain is affected in different levels in people one thing is sure that no one likes pain. I have mentioned above the causative agent of pain is hurt. Depending on what sort of hurt you get the pain is differentiated. More than 90% of the mental pains are caused because of other people through their words, actions, feelings etc which can actually be prevented and only a 10% of mental pain is caused by uncontrollable factors like death etc.
I personally believe nobody likes to hurt others. Then why do other people get hurt? It involves a lot of factors like the situation, mood, drugs and related things, relationships, lack of respect etc make people to hurt each other through their words or actions or feelings. For example if you having a great day and you find someone for no reason insult you even though it hurts you, you won’t be as sad as the same thing happen to you on a bad day! See it is the same thing, same person, same place but the other factors how you were before meeting the person even contribute to the intensity of pain! Likewise there are many factors behind the pain.
But whatever it is, it is hard to go through painful situations. God blessed us with tears in eyes. It is a common thing to get our eyes filled with water uncontrollably and flow out as tears when we under go pain. Tear is an emotional sensation which signals the other person that you are in pain. Tear is a blessing as it seems to irradiate the pain at times maybe by diverting our minds without our knowledge from concentrating on pain to tears!
Nobody can estimate the pain of other person. This is because each individual is unique and that’s the way how God made each individual. Therefore the only person who knows the real pain in you is not even you but is God! Mental Pain is very common and the only thing to subside that pain is by comforting, reassuring and hopeful words. This is why we see thousands of comforting verses in Bible which reassures our faith, hope, love and trust in God.
‘God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.’ (Psalm 46:1 NIV)
‘I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.’ (Psalm 27:13-14 NIV)
‘So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.’ (Isaiah 41:10 NIV)
‘And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.’ (Romans 8:28 NIV)
‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’ (Philippians 4:6-7 NIV)
“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5 NIV)
‘But now, this is what the Lord says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.’ (Isaiah 43:1-2 NIV)
‘“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.’ (Isaiah 49:15-16 NIV)
‘And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’ (Matthew 28:20 NIV)
These are a few among the many comforting verses from Bible. but if you really go through Bible there are thousands of comforting verses depending on what situation you in.
Why does pain happens? Why does problems come in life? Even though nobody likes to have pain, pain can become blessings in life.
When we come to 1 Chronicles 4:9,10 we see a person who been mentioned in just 2 verses.
‘Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “I gave birth to him in pain.” Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.’ (1 Chronicles 4:9-10 NIV)
There is nothing more about him just two verses but a lot been said in those two verses. Bible scholars say he might be born with some deformities or he may be a disable person by birth. Anyway we see he was a pain to his mother and she named him pain! He was not a respectable person in society. He had to under go many painful situations in life. This made him to cry to God “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And we read God granted his request. So even though he undergo severe pain in life it turned out those pain eventually became a blessing in life. As the verse 9 says his situations changed and he became honourable than his brothers! When we come to 1 Chronicles 2:55 we see God blessed him so immensely that God enlarged his territory to a City and named the city Jabez and it was not just ordinary people but great tribes of scientists lived in Jabez!
‘and the clans of scribes who lived at Jabez‘ the Tirathites, Shimeathites and Sucathites. These are the Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of the Rekabites. (1 Chronicles 2:55 NIV)
See what a great transformation! The one who once named ‘pain’ has become a blessing now!
Again when we come to book of Job, we see Job was a noble and great man who was blessed with so much wealth and possessions but problems hit his life and he lost his children, wealth and even his own health. I don’t think no other person have ever gone through such trials in life as Job did. If it was any of us we might have ended our life right there. But Job even though he lost everything, he remained faithful before God and God blessed him so immensely that He gave him twice of everything he lost. ‘The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys.’ (Job 42:12 NIV). See even though he went though insufferable pain, God made his pain a great blessing that his latter days were even better than his former days!
There are many more examples throughout the Bible of people who went through extreme pains in life. But when we examine each of their lives, we can clearly see none of them perished as a result of their pain but God turned their pains to greater and bigger blessings, God turned their mourning to rejoicing. God blessed each and everyone of them who remained faithful during the time of pain!
Therefore my dear readers when you undergo pain in life don’t get upset. The pain is not to kill you but is to built you, to transform you to a better person that God can use for the glory of His name. Therefore be faithful, be submissive and remain still. God is right beside you. God is able to deliver you out of all your troubles and He will change all those pains to greater blessings in life! He will not allow anyone or anything to hurt you to more than you can handle! God is an everlasting God and His words remain the same yesterday, today and forever. And no one can phantom his wisdom and his plans and thoughts are so great for us. Also be sure not to hurt anyone or to create pain to anyone by any means in our lives. For it is said-‘No one who hopes in you will ever be put to shame, but shame will come on those who are treacherous without cause.’ (Psalm 25:3 NIV)
“Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10 NIV)
‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.’ (Hebrews 13:8 NIV)
‘For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV)
‘How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand— when I awake, I am still with you.’ (Psalm 139:17-18 NIV)
‘How great are your works, Lord, how profound your thoughts!’ (Psalm 92:5 NIV)
‘“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.’ (Isaiah 55:8-11 NIV)
