God of Small things…

God of Small things…

In this world everyone’s behind success. Nobody like to be a failure in life and everyone tries one or other way to be successful. Some people defines success by becoming famous were as some by becoming rich, others by power, some through art, music, dance and many other fields. So people who wants to become successful they try to find someone relevant in their fields and set them as role models and try to follow them to become successful. People who wants to become famous will try to become famous by following great personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King and many other great personalities depending on their attributes and skills while those who want to be rich will follow big corporates like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and other great corporates and to those who want to become successful in music will follow great musicians like Micheal Jackson, Elton John and other great artists. Nobody will set any one anonymous or non popular personalities as their role model. People always go behind the big people not behind any simple common man.

It is therefore our human nature to go behind all big, famous and great things in the world. Nobody likes the small or normal or weak things in the world. But what people forget is small things are the very basis of the big things. We see people who when they become famous they tend to forget those who are lower to them in the society as it reflects their social status. But we got to understand the great things are build not just like that but by using small small things. For example the world’s biggest building Burj Khalifa was not made as Burj Khalifa but it was made with great efforts of thousands of workers using several construction machineries and components like sand, cement, iron, concrete, glass etc. When all those small components were put together in the right way Burj Khalifa came to existence. It’s the same way behind people. No common People won’t become famous just in a day or two and without any help. There are several smaller components that worked behind the success of those people. Therefore we should not ignore anyone especially the lower ones in society in our life.

The very existence of life on oceans are not from big things but is from the smallest things. Planktons are tiny microscopic plants that are invisible to naked eye. But scientists now consider this small plant the very basis of sea life. These small microscopic plants bloom in large quantities in the ocean and small fishes and other small creatures feed on them to which bigger fishes and animals live to which the biggest creature on earth Blue Whale feeds. Thus it is the tiny little planktons that lay as the very basis of sea life! Isn’t that amazing? God didn’t make the so huge blue whale but the smallest Planktons invisible to human eyes as the very basis of sea life!

And it is the same thing with everything. All things in this world are made up of different different smaller components. When we learn chemistry we find the smallest components of matter are called atoms. And these atoms build up together to make up matter. Without those atoms there is no matter! Interesting right? And everyone knows the power of the Uranium atoms after the Second World War in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. So tiny yet so powerful!

Again take you and me each individual in the world. Everyone’s not born as a big person but each one of us were formed as a single cell called ‘zygote‘ inside our mother’s womb. So tiny that no naked eyes can se them. Yes! We were that tiny! And from there that single cell multiplied inside our mother’s womb for nine months and we were formed as a perfect baby and came to existence in this world! How unbelievable and marvellous is it? Therefore there is a lot of importance for small things and we should not discard the value of smaller things in the world.

This is the same in life. People don’t consider or value any small things but what they don’t understand is, the small things have greater potential than the greater things. God doesn’t look into great things but God looks to small things. This is why in 1 Corinthians it’s said- ‘But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.’ (‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭1‬:‭27-29‬ NIV)

This verse always remained one of my favourite verses in Bible. It has always amused me about this sort of selection mentioned here. It is quite self explanatory. You take any instance in Bible we see this principle applied in each instances. Let me draw a few instances and summarise this passage.

We know when King Solomon was appointed as the King of Israel, he was a small boy of twelve years old! People were worried how he is going to handle things as it was still the early stage of the so called country Israel and Solomon was the third king. Even King Solomon was worried how he going to rule over Israel. But God appeared to him in a dream and granted him a wish and he replied he need the wisdom to rule his kingdom! Such young boy didn’t ask for any money or riches but asked for wisdom! God was pleased in him and he blessed him in such a way that he gave not only the knowledge and wisdom but also all wealth, possessions and honor!

‘That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” Solomon answered God, “You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me king in his place. Now, Lord God, let your promise to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth. Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?” God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth, possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, possessions and honor, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.”’ (‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭1‬:‭7-12‬ NIV)

God blessed him with such great wisdom and knowledge that he was wiser than any wise men during that time and he wrote 3000 proverbs and 1005 songs and he even wrote about plant life, animals, birds and all living things on earth in such ancient time during 970-931BC!

God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore. Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. He was wiser than anyone else, including Ethan the Ezrahite—wiser than Heman, Kalkol and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations. He spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five. He spoke about plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of walls. He also spoke about animals and birds, reptiles and fish. From all nations people came to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, sent by all the kings of the world, who had heard of his wisdom.’ (‭1 Kings‬ ‭4‬:‭29-34‬ NIV)

Another two examples are Joseph and Daniel. They both were not very wise men by birth and they were not brought from a valued places. Joseph was in prison in Egypt. It so happened the Pharaoh of Egypt had a vision and no wise men of that time could interpret the dream. Joseph was brought to Pharaoh’s presence and God gave him wisdom to interpret not only the dream but also the solution on how to prepare in the coming years for God gave Pharaoh a vision of famine of 7 years heading after 7 years of great harvest. This made Pharaoh make Joseph to come out not only of the prison but he was appointed as the next person to Pharaoh! (Genesis 41)

It’s almost the same with Daniel. King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream and no one could interpret the dream. The king ordered the wise men of that time to tell the dream without king revealing the dream and interpret it! Nobody was able to do it. And the king ordered to kill all the so called wise man. But when Daniel and his friends heard about this and he and his friends prayed before God and God filled Daniel with great wisdom and revealed the king’s dream and the interpretation! It was a vision about all the kingdoms that coming to rule over the earth and the end of the world. And we know that dream is true as it is still happening as how the dream was interpreted! And Daniel was raised from the slave to the second after King! (Daniel 2)

See a young boy Solomon who didn’t know anything as much as an adult was blessed with immense wisdom and knowledge, two Normal men Joseph and Daniel they were blessed with great knowledge that they were brought out one from jail and another from slave to become the second person after King! Wasn’t there any other people who were wiser than them? Of course yes! But God nullified there knowledge by choosing not so great or talented people like Solomon, Joseph and Daniel and filling them with great wisdom and knowledge and shamed those great wise people of that age!

‘Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?” For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.’ (‭Romans‬ ‭11‬:‭33-36‬ NIV)

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.’ (‭Isaiah‬ ‭40‬:‭28‬ NIV)

We all heard about David and Goliath. Goliath was a strong giant. He was 6 cubits and a span tall (9 feet and 6 inches tall)! He came to attack Israel and called anyone to come and fight with him. Israelites were terrified. But it was a small young lad a shepherd boy, lean and thin ‘David’ who went with a sling and five smooth stones to fight against Goliath! Goliath was fully armed and protected while David literally had no weapon or any sort of protection on him. But David shot a stone using his sling and it hit Goliath’s forehead and he fell down. David ran to him got on top of him and using Goliath’s sword he chopped his head off! David was like a small dog before Goliath but God used this short David to kill the strong giant Goliath! (1 Samuel 17)

Samson a single man when he found Philistines were coming to attack him, he took the dry jaw bone of a donkey from ground and using that he killed the Philistines as two heaps of 500 each! A single man just using a dry jaw bone as weapon and killed 1000 men! (Judges 15)

When Midianites attacked Israel, Gideon took just 300 people and no weapons but just a pot, a torch and trumpet in their hands and when they broke the pot and triumphed with trumpets, God made a great confusion in the mighty army of 135,000 Midanites and they killed each other giving a great victory to Israel! (Judges 7)

There are many more instances like victory over the huge army of 185,000 Assyrians, breaking Jericho wall and many other things which happened when God strengthened the so called short and weak people. When people in higher society get proud and start attacking the lower ones who else other than God can deliver them from their hands?

Then Asa called to the Lord his God and said, “ Lord, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, Lord our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast army. Lord, you are our God; do not let mere mortals prevail against you.”’ (‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭14‬:‭11‬ NIV)

“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” (‭James‬ ‭4‬:‭6‬ NIV)

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.’ (‭Isaiah‬ ‭40‬:‭29-31‬ NIV)

In 1 Samuel 16 we see Samuel the great prophet of God got a message from God to fill anointing oil in his anointing horn and head to Jesse of Bethlehem and there God will guide whom to anoint as the next king of Israel. When Samuel reached Bethlehem he found Jesse of Bethlehem as God spoke to Samuel. Samuel told him to come for the sacrifice with his sons. And when they came for sacrifice seeing the first son of Jesse ‘Eliab‘ Samuel thought he’s the chosen one and was about to anoint him as the future king of Israel. But the next verse is more important for it says- ‘When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”’ (‭1 Samuel‬ ‭16‬:‭6-7‬ NIV).

See when Samuel saw Eliab he thought he’s the chosen one for he looked fit for a king. But see what God chooses, God did not choose the outward appearance but He looks at the heart! Then Samuel made each and every son of Jesse to come before him and he told Jesse none of them were selected but if he has any other sons. Then Jesse speaks about David and Samuel asks him to call him. But David was not there for he was not considered as any important member in the family. While the great prophet of God has come to his house Jesse didn’t even bother to call his son David to come home? David was wandering in the forests taking care of his father’s sheep. But see God makes David to bring home and God made Samuel to anoint David as the future king of Israel before his father and brothers! Oh what a great honour! David was considered of no value or rejected in his house but God saw David the oppressed and chose him to shame those who thought they are something!

In another instance we see Ahithophel one of David’s minister joined his son Prince Absalom and conspired to overtake the kingdom from David’s hand and they almost succeeded. When David came to know Ahithophel joined Absalom David cried to God asking to make Ahithophel’s plan to go in vain as Ahithophel was a very wise and noble man and his ‘words’were considered as from ‘God’ those days.
Now in those days the advice Ahithophel gave was like that of one who inquires of God. That was how both David and Absalom regarded all of Ahithophel’s advice.‘ (‭2 Samuel‬ ‭16‬:‭23‬ NIV)
And we see another man Hushai who was of ‘no value‘ before Ahithophel as he was an old and weak man. But God used Hushai to make Ahithophel’s plan to go in vain! (Please go through 2 Samuel chapters 15 to 18). And when Ahithophel saw his plan went vain he couldn’t accept it and hung himself. The same person who made plans to kill King David is now dead. See the mighty way how God used the so called ‘nothing’ Hushai before the so called ‘God’ Ahithophel to nullify his plans and save King David! See the way how God works, he uses the non valued, rejected, afflicted small things to do great things so that the so called great, strong and valued people who are proud will be put to shame.

When we read in New Testament we see Jesus selecting his disciples. Jesus never went to the great men like Nicodemus or Gamaliel great scholars of that time and asked to follow Him but He went to poor, non valued, illiterate people like Peter, John, Andrew etc who were of no great backgrounds and asked them to follow him. And they left there livelihood fishing, tax collection and other jobs and followed Jesus! And those 12 disciples whom Jesus called were made the Apostles (except Judas Iscariot) of the New Testament church and made them the 12 pillars of God’s church which is build on the foundation of Jesus Christ!

Therefore my dear reader if you think you are a failure in life or you are considered very small and you are not valued by anyone and facing all oppressions and suppression from all side, don’t worry God uses such the low valued people for the glorification of his name. For he will make the dumb wise, the weak strong and make out something great out of nothing! As it is said ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.’ (‭Psalm‬ ‭118‬:‭22-23‬ NIV)!

‘Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”’ (‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭1‬:‭26-31‬ NIV)

‘Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life.’ (‭Isaiah‬ ‭43‬:‭4‬ NIV)

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.’ (‭Matthew‬ ‭10‬:‭29-31‬ NIV)

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.‘ (‭Luke‬ ‭12‬:‭6-7‬ NIV)

‘In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (‭1 Peter‬ ‭5‬:‭5-7‬ NIV)
