Understanding True Size…
We are blessed with good eyesight. We can see both near and far objects clearly. Unlike animals we are blessed with colour vision and a better lens than any advanced camera. But when coming to understanding sizes we often fool our eyes. When we see big things we really don’t understand the bigness of the object. For example, when we see a ship even though it appears big we really don’t understand the size of it. It’s only when we see those huge cargo containers that are stacked on top of the ship appear as small match boxes we understand the true size of the ship. It’s the same with big buildings or towers, even though it appears big the true size is revealed when you compare the size of the worker working on top of the building or tower who appear like a small twig!
It’s the same with God. Even though we know God is big we don’t know or understand the true size of God. How much ever we try to understand the bigness of God it’s far beyond our imagination. A little is explained in Isaiah 40.
‘Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance? Who can fathom the Spirit of the Lord, or instruct the Lord as his counselor? Whom did the Lord consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge, or showed him the path of understanding? Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust. Lebanon is not sufficient for altar fires, nor its animals enough for burnt offerings. Before him all the nations are as nothing; they are regarded by him as worthless and less than nothing.’ (Isaiah 40:12-17 NIV)
Here the Greatness of God is mentioned in various ways. The first part of the verse is about the size of God. We know two third of the earth is covered in water and God can hold all water in the world in his hallow of hand! And about the dust, the entire surface of the earth is covered in dust. They appear so small that we usually don’t recognize the presence of dust around us, however if you look through the stream of sunlight coming into a dark room you can see the presence of dust in the room. The amount of dust in the desert is beyond measure! The dust storms in the Middle East are notorious for obstructing the view and causing accidents on roads. But God can collect the entire dust of the world and contain it in a basket! He weighs not with weights, but with mountains and hills! All this all is mentioned just about the size and ability of his hands. If His hand is this big, how much bigger is God! Again in the verses down God shows how we are before him. The whole people in the world are like a drop of water in a bucket. It is estimated there are around 7,1780,000000 (7.178 billion) people in this world. What about those who die every day? There are billions and billions who have died from the very beginning of the mankind. And God says the whole lot of everyone together appear as a drop of water in a bucket before God! The nations are like the dust sitting on an unused scale! The islands are dust before him, but the beauty of it is even though we appear so tiny and none of our works can be as big as him He loves us. He weighs our activities. He cares for our actions. He cares for us! What a great God!
Next God speaks about His wisdom and knowledge. No-one can imagine the wisdom of God! His wisdom is clear through the work of His hands, the creation of everything in the universe. The perfection even to the minute detail! How great is it? Can you imagine a huge ball hanging in vacuum? It’s impossible to human wisdom, but God has hung the earth, other planets, stars, comets, asteroids and other heavenly objects in vacuum! You know the light travels at a speed of 300,000 KM/second and it takes more than seven minutes to reach the sunlight to earth. Sun is kept so far from the earth still we feel the heat of the sun unbearable at times! Can any man made thing can do the same? If we want to warm water we need to keep it closer to fire in order to get the heat on the vessel to boil it, but God kept sun 149,600,000 KMs away and it provides heat and light to such far planet Earth where we live. Did you know even though it takes more than 7 minutes for the sunlight to reach earth, it took more than 100,000 years to produce the light inside the sun that you see today! That means none of our ancestors lived on earth to the sunlight you see today! Many of the lights from far stars we see in the sky were released several thousands of years back and many of those stars don’t even exist today while you still observe the light from the star in the sky!
How about you and me? How perfectly has God created each one of us. If you learn the anatomy of human body you understand the perfection of God’s creation. The minute details of each and every small parts and role of each internal organs in our body. God gifted us with such brain that no super computers are not even closer to the capability of our brains! Yet we were all born as a single cell called zygote in our mother’s womb! So complex yet so small. So big yet so tiny! Who can understand the wisdom and knowledge of God? God once asked Job a set of questions around 4000 years back and even today, our so called modern science has no answer to any of it. The questions can be found in Job: 38,39,40 chapters. God’s wisdom is beyond our imagination. How does bones form inside mother’s womb? As said its a tiny small cell called zygote, we were formed. But how did it become like certain cells developed into brain, heart, skin, hands, legs, bones and other organs of the body? How wonderfully master crafted pieces are we! God’s wisdom and knowledge are so incredible that we can never ever compare any to anything!
Then what are we doing? Do we really realize the true size of God? To whom are we comparing God? It’s again said in Isaiah 40. ‘With whom, then, will you compare God? To what image will you liken him? As for an idol, a metalworker casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and fashions silver chains for it. A person too poor to present such an offering selects wood that will not rot; they look for a skilled worker to set up an idol that will not topple.’ (Isaiah 40:18-20 NIV)
‘All who make idols are nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless. Those who would speak up for them are blind; they are ignorant, to their own shame. Who shapes a god and casts an idol, which can profit nothing? People who do that will be put to shame; such craftsmen are only human beings. Let them all come together and take their stand; they will be brought down to terror and shame. The blacksmith takes a tool and works with it in the coals; he shapes an idol with hammers, he forges it with the might of his arm. He gets hungry and loses his strength; he drinks no water and grows faint. The carpenter measures with a line and makes an outline with a marker; he roughs it out with chisels and marks it with compasses. He shapes it in human form, human form in all its glory, that it may dwell in a shrine. He cut down cedars, or perhaps took a cypress or oak. He let it grow among the trees of the forest, or planted a pine, and the rain made it grow. It is used as fuel for burning; some of it he takes and warms himself, he kindles a fire and bakes bread. But he also fashions a god and worships it; he makes an idol and bows down to it. Half of the wood he burns in the fire; over it he prepares his meal, he roasts his meat and eats his fill. He also warms himself and says, “Ah! I am warm; I see the fire.” From the rest he makes a god, his idol; he bows down to it and worships. He prays to it and says, “Save me! You are my god!” They know nothing, they understand nothing; their eyes are plastered over so they cannot see, and their minds closed so they cannot understand. No one stops to think, no one has the knowledge or understanding to say, “Half of it I used for fuel; I even baked bread over its coals, I roasted meat and I ate. Shall I make a detestable thing from what is left? Shall I bow down to a block of wood?” Such a person feeds on ashes; a deluded heart misleads him; he cannot save himself, or say, “Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?”’ (Isaiah 44:9-20 NIV)
“With whom will you compare me or count me equal? To whom will you liken me that we may be compared? Some pour out gold from their bags and weigh out silver on the scales; they hire a goldsmith to make it into a god, and they bow down and worship it. They lift it to their shoulders and carry it; they set it up in its place, and there it stands. From that spot it cannot move. Even though someone cries out to it, it cannot answer; it cannot save them from their troubles. “Remember this, keep it in mind, take it to heart, you rebels. Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.’ (Isaiah 46:5-10 NIV)
How foolish are we to consider this great God to be a sculpture made out of metal or a piece of wood? How can you consider God to be something that you made out of your own? How stupid is it if someone make an idol of you in metal or wood and ask it about you while you are standing next to it? Isn’t it the same you do with worshiping an idol believing it is God while God is far, far bigger and nothing to the idol, alive and standing right beside you! How can you a worship a sculpture made of wood while you use the same wood for other things like to burn it for preparing food and to get heat? Will you burn God? How can you consider the image of God to be something that you carve out of wood or metal?
Again, God asks how can you compare Him to an idol for an idol cannot see, hear, smell, feel, walk or can’t even say a word! Those who are worshiping idols are like those sculptures for their ability to understand God is gone and that’s why they worship these idols.
‘Why do the nations say, “Where is their God?” Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him. But their idols are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell. They have hands, but cannot feel, feet, but cannot walk, nor can they utter a sound with their throats. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.’ (Psalm 115:2-8 NIV)
Those who worship idols open your eyes and understand the true God. God is nothing to any idol. Lift your eyes to sky and see the creation of God by seeing the entire universe. He lives in heaven. He rules all over the universe. He is an everlasting God! He never grows tired or weak. His wisdom is beyond anyone can fathom.
‘Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff. “To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.‘ (Isaiah 40:21-26 NIV)
‘Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.’ (Isaiah 40: 28 NIV)
Therefore, let’s remove all the concepts on understanding God. He’s far beyond our imagination. Let’s take away all misunderstandings and accept true God. For He is a loving and kind God. If you return to him He will accept you and forgive your sins and fill you with heavenly peace. He will wash away our offenses like a cloud and sins like the morning mist. Let our sins be like scarlet and crimson if you come to God, He will wash away all those sins from scarlet and crimson to White as wool and snow!
“Remember these things, Jacob, for you, Israel, are my servant. I have made you, you are my servant; Israel, I will not forget you. I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist. Return to me, for I have redeemed you.” (Isaiah 44:21-22 NIV)
“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” (Isaiah 1:18 NIV)
Therefore remove all the vagueness in understanding God and realize the true God in life. As said above, even though we appear so tiny before Him, He loves us and He cares for us! That’s why even though we fall into the pit of sin, God still loves us and when nobody wasn’t able to redeem us from our sins, God send his Son ‘Jesus‘ to this wretched earth to die for our sins and redeem us from all bound ages of sins. Even though He created everything, He became the lowest level for you and for me. He the creator of everything lived on this earth like any one of us, but not committing sins and when the appointed time came Jesus took all the sins of mankind and was crucified on the cross of Calvary. He died for you and me. He bore all our sins, offenses, inequities and transgressions on him and underwent great pain on the Cross of Calvary and gave even the very last drop of blood in his body for the redemption of our sins. And not only that He gave this gift of salvation absolutely free to those who say this prayer from the bottom of your heart- Heavenly Father, I accept and believe Jesus is the only true God who came to redeem my sins. I believe Jesus is the son of God who came to this earth to die for my sins and to fulfil Jesus died on the Cross of Calvary and all the sufferings and pain that Jesus took on the body was for me, He was broken down and gave His very last drop of blood for me on the Cross of Calvary for the redemption of my sins and I accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour in my life, I confess my sins and give my life for Jesus. Please forgive me for every mistake I made in my life. Please come in me, live in me, fill in me and guide me until the last breath of my life and help me to stay away from evil ways and lead a holy and victorious Christian life as you please. And bring me to heaven to be with you forever. In Jesus name. Amen!
And to those who accept Jesus in life and lead a holy life, Jesus is coming back to take you to His place heaven.
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14:1-3 NIV)
Therefore, let’s destroy all arguments, idols, imaginations that come across understanding true God – Jesus Christ in our lives and live a life of hope by accepting Jesus in our life and leading a holy life. He is the only true God and worthy of all praise. Will you understand and accept the one and only one true God ‘Jesus’ in your life and change your views on true God?
‘We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.’ (2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV)
‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.’ (John 3:16 NIV)
‘In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!’ (Philippians 2:5-8 NIV)
‘For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.’ (2 Corinthians 8:9 NIV)
‘If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.’ (Romans 10:9-10 NIV)
‘And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.‘ (Philippians 4:7 NIV)
